In the beginning of 2015 i got an invitation to do a solo exhibtion in the New York City based gallery "Museum Quality". In cooperation with curator Suzi Teo and her team we set up a show named "Exploration of Stillness" that was running from 27 aug - 14 sep 2015.
The title “Exploration of Stillness“ suggests at first glance that the exhibited works deal with calmness, evenness and a search for tranquillity. The attributes hinted at by the title hide and exclude a very important and inherent aspect of Mateit’s objects, which the viewer discovers upon a closer examination. All of Mateit’s works on display reveal their potential to change and to transform. This metamorphosis of daily objects and views of daily life from a passive and inactive state to a changeable and moving creation, which entices the viewer but also relies on the viewer to create his
own changes in his mind, add tension and force to these art works in a surprising contrast to the title of the exhibition. The exhibited objects, installations and drawings combine the artist’s personal experiences with an examination of the daily life of Christian Mateit, who grew up close to Berlin. The artist connects these elements with a critical questioning of the meaning and relation between static existence, motionlessness and safety. His work renders the beauty and quality of dynamics visible, while employing the familiarity of the materials used to underline the connection and
inherent ability for change within a moment and the objects that appear to be in our daily life in a static and passive place.
